STATUE OF THE POET OVIDIUS

Ovidiu Square - find it on Constanta Map

The statue is located at Ovidius square and represents the Latin poet Ovidius Publius Naso, the first great poet who lived on Romanian territory. Ovidiu is the author of the well known poems “Tristae”, “Ars Amandi”, “Remedia Amoris”, “Metamorphose”, “Fasti”.

The statue was sculptured by the Italian artist Ettore Ferrari and was placed in Constanta in 1887. Ettore Ferrari is also the artist who sculptured the Abraham Lincoln’s statue in Washington.

In 1925 a copy of this work was located in Sulmona, poet's native town.
