Being
set up in 1961, the Art Museum exhibits nowadays more than 7,300 masterpieces of
Romanian modern and contemporaneous art - painting, sculpture, graphics and
decorative art (ceramics, china, upholstery, furniture). The collection includes
fine arts gallery of the Constanta Town Hall and acquisitions, due to a coherent
politics and valuable judgments. The structure of the museum is chronological,
covering the exigency of a great museum and presents a century of art from the
creation of Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ion Andreescu, Stefan Ionescu
Valbundea to the great names of contemporaneous plastic art - Corneliu Baba,
Alexandru Ciucureanu, Ion Jalea, Gheorghe Anghel. Within a chronological
structure it has appeared a selective secondary criterion based on art inspired
of Dobrogea. From the "poor Dobrogea" accessories towards the
lavishness of the panoramas, from the descriptive images to symbols - Balciul,
Mangalia, Techirghiol, Tuzla or Constanta have polarized concerns of our great
painters like Nicolae Tonitza, Francisc Sirato, Stefan Dimitrescu, Gheorghe
Petrascu, Marius Bunescu who reproduced, in a personal vision, the scenery of
region.
The
museum opened in 1961, in a building on no. 12, Muzeelor Street. The foundation
of the new museum was laid in 1982, after architect T. Socolescu's drawings,
near to the oldest school turned into a part of the museum, so that in 1987 the
enlarged museum was inaugurated. Ever since it houses the museum collections.
The
Art museum is an open one, so the temporary exhibition - national and
international, retrospective or personal, thematic or monographic, personal or
collective ones - are organized in an alert rhythm, wishing to answer as many
requests as possible, options or decisions and are reflected in the specialized
publications.
